Look Great for the Summer with Self-Tanning Lotions!

Sunless tanning or self-tanning lotions are a practical alternative to exposing your skin to the damaging effect of the sun’s UV rays just to a sun-kissed glow. However, you need to understand how these products work and how to apply them properly.

How Do Self-Tanning Lotions Work?

Who would have thought that getting a tanned look without having to expose oneself to the UV rays of the sun would be possible? Professional spray-on tanning is an option. But if you want to DIY, then there are also self-tanning products, such as cream, spray, and lotion, you can use at home.

The color additive dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the active ingredient of sunless tanning products, is the one responsible for creating that tanned look effect. When applied, the DHA reacts with the skin’s dead cells, which adds a layer of temporarily darkened skin that simulates a tan. The color will typically wear off in just several days.

Most self-tanning products don’t have sunscreen. And even if they do, it will only last for a few hours. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves of the external skin application of DHA, so self-tanning products are considered to be a safe option to sunbathing – as long as they are used as directed.

How to Apply Self-Tanning Lotions

It’s always best to follow the package directions for best results. However, the tips listed below can help make your faux glow look more natural.

  • Exfoliate. Make sure to take some time to exfoliate before the application of a self-tanning lotion. You can use any exfoliating product or washcloth to remove excess dead skin cells.
  • Apply in sections. Applying the tanner in sections will make it easier to control. Massage the lotion in a circular motion, and make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap after every part you applied the product on. This will help you avoid getting your palms discolored with the tanner.
  • Wipe joint areas. Diluting the tanner by applying it with a damp cloth will help lessen the tanning effect on areas that tend to absorb more of the product, such as the elbows, ankles, and knees.
  • Wait till the product is completely dry. To avoid staining your clothes, make sure to wait at least 10 minutes or until the tanner is completely dry before getting dressed. It would also be best if you could avoid sweating.
